Easy Natural Sleep Aids for Babies

It is often the big joke for new parents that they won't be getting any sleep once the baby is born.  You see it in books, movies, and television shows.  If you have a baby, you won't be getting any sleep.  Why; because most babies do not get adequate sleep during the first few months of their life.   This can even go on for longer, up to a year old.  Most people accept this as normal or as a rite of passage, but you don't have to.  There are methods that can help your baby fall asleep at night.  If they sleep, then so can you.

For a newborn baby, sleep is much different.  Instead of one full night of sleep and being awake for the rest of the day like an adult, they sleep in intervals.  In fact, babies spend most of their time asleep.  The problem comes in when they are fussy or unhappy when they wake up.  It can also cause problems if your newborn child wakes up too often while at night.

When adults have sleep problems, they will generally use sleep aid medication in order to help them through the night.  Since babies have delicate immune systems, it is not a good idea to use this method for them.  Instead, it is best to use natural ways to get your baby to fall asleep.  These baby sleep aids are often very helpful.

One of the best ways to help a newborn baby to fall asleep is to swaddle them.  Wrap your baby up in a small blanket.  Cover them fully up to the neck.  Don't wrap them too tight, but you do want them to feel snug.  This is very affective for newborns because it makes them feel comfortable and safe.  You can do this as a well to help them fall asleep.  You can also use this method if they wake up at night.  Some parents have found that their baby falls back asleep faster when they are being swaddled.

Often the best way to get your baby to fall asleep, whether they are a newborn or a toddler, is to create a routine.  Impose a regular sleep routine in order to make it a habit.  Encourage them to sleep longer at night and to stay awake more often during the day.  This can be hard for newborn babies, but it will get easier as the weeks and months go by.  Once they know when the proper time to sleep is, they will follow this rule.  You will then have a much nicer night of sleep as well.

Remember that, while it may be tempting, it is bad to give your baby sleep aid medication. Instead, try natural ways to help them sleep.  If the swaddling and routines do not work, there are other methods that might be helpful as well.  Although it does not work for every baby, you could try some ambient noise in the room with the crib.  This can often soothe the baby and help them sleep.  This can be achieved with an expensive noise machine.  A cheaper solution is to use a small, noisy fan.  Just point it up to the ceiling and keep it on when you want the baby to fall asleep.

While it is common for parents to have terrible sleep patterns after their baby is born, you don't have to settle for this.  If you employ the right methods, you can help your baby get to sleep with natural baby sleep aids.  Once they sleep well, then so will you, and you will be much happier for it.
